Why we monitor people's attitudes to environmental regulations

Waikato Regional Council shares responsibility for implementing the Resource Management Act 1991 in the Waikato region. People’s attitudes to environmental regulations relates to their willingness to adopt and comply with environmental regulations. This measure guides policy setting and assists in planning environmental education programmes to fill information gaps.

This indicator monitors people’s attitudes towards environmental regulations at the regional, district council, urban and rural levels.

Results - data and trends

  • In 2022 most people (64.5 per cent) had medium-to-high support (ratings of 7-9) for environmental regulations.
  • 20.8 per cent gave a score of 9 for strong support.
  • 35.5 per cent gave low to neutral support (ratings of 3-6) for environmental regulations in 2022.

In April to May 2022, 1026, people throughout the region were surveyed. People answered three questions relating to people's and government's rights and responsibilities to limit environmental harm on private property.

In 2022, on average people’s level of support for environmental regulation was 7 on a scale of 3 to 9 where 9 is strong support and 3 is strong opposition. In 2019, on average people’s level of support for environmental regulations was 7.7. In 2016 the average was similarly 7.72. In 2013 it was 7.57, 7.68 in 2006, and 7.45 in 2003. The highest average score was 7.8 in 2000.
