Our biosecurity activities are a vital component of the national biosecurity system. This system is designed to prevent, mitigate or minimise the impacts of pest species, which can have environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts.

Waikato Regional Council has regional leadership for pest management in the Waikato region. The council’s Waikato Biosecurity Strategy 2022-2032 defines what that leadership looks like and outlines our regional biosecurity priorities. The Waikato Regional Pest Management Plan 2022-2032, prepared under the Biosecurity Act, guides all our pest control programmes. It sets out the rules that occupiers in our region must comply with, so we can all work to protect the things we value in our region. Pest management activities contribute to other Waikato Regional Council functions, such as maintaining and enhancing biodiversity and minimising flood risks through enhanced soil stability.
